Next Sunday sees Supremacy Fight Challenge return for their first event of 2013 in the form of Supremacy FC 9. The night is headlined by a European Middleweight Title fight between the defending champion and UKMMA legend Mark Weir. The challenger for the title popped into The Fight Lounge for a few words prior to his final week before the fight.

Mark “The Wizard” Weir is a true legend of the sport on these shores and has fought all over the globe, in some of the best promotions there is, including the UFC. This will be the first time he has ever competed on Supremacy FC however and we wondered how he felt about it.

“I think it will be a great experience fighting in front of a new crowd and I am really looking forward to it.”

Weir has had a long, storied career in the world of mixed martial arts however this will be his first fight in the sport in almost two years. We wondered what, if anything, prompted his return to the sport.

“I am always looking for fights however I have been extremely busy with my fighters. I have had fights booked in that timeframe too but unfortunately was forced to withdraw with injuries.”

Standing opposite him on fight night will be the champion, Micky Burns. Knowing how professional Mark is we thought he would have done his homework on Burns and he had indeed.

“I’ve watched him fight a few times – he is very aggressive, always gives 100% and is very well rounded. I feel his main danger is his strong ground and pound and that he is hard to finish. In preparation for him I have been working on keeping my stand up sharp and defending the takedowns.”

With the mention of training in the last response we had to ask how his camp has gone as a whole in preparation for this fight.

“Training has gone very well. I have a great team behind me and they push me in all areas.”

Next up was what we feel to be as essential in any pre-fight interview; did Mark have a message for Micky and what his prediction for the fight is?

“Micky, this is a title defence and I am coming to see if you’re a worthy champion! As for a prediction, the fans can expect to see me to be quick, explosive and very entertaining. I predict that I will wear him out, slow him down and then finish him!”

At 45 years old Mark has shown no signs of slowing down his career so we wondered what he would like to go on and achieve in the rest of 2013 should he be victorious in this fight.

“If I leave this fight the champion, I would like to fight for the welterweight title and unify the belts.”

Before we let Mark go and return to his training, we gave him the opportunity to say anything he liked before he left.

“It is a pleasure and honour to be fighting on this show and most importantly I’m looking forward to entertaining a new crowd.”

To see Mark in action be sure to get down to Supremacy FC 9 which takes place 17th February from The Lancastrian Suite at the Federation Brewery in Dunston, Gateshead.
