Last night, Liverpudlian based mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion Olympian Mixed Martial Art Championship (OMMAC), returned for its second event of this year with OMMAC 17: High Octane, from its home of the Olympia in Liverpool, and was headlined with the OMMAC British middleweight championship fight between two of the UK’s top twenty middleweights, Lee Chadwick and Denniston Sutherland.

The OMMAC 17 card had to undergo a number of changes right up until the day before the event. The fight card featured two professional title fights, one was the main event for the OMMAC British middleweight title and the other was for the OMMAC British featherweight title between Andrew Fisher and Shat Walsh. Also on the card was another ten professional fights, a number of unified amateur rules fights with one being for the AFC featherweight title between Chino Nwinyinya and Thomas Nolan.

Main Event – OMMAC British Middleweight Title – Lee Chadwick vs. Denniston Sutherland:

In the first round Chadwick immediately took the fight to the cage trying for a takedown and to gain the upper hand. The two competed for the dominant position turning each other around. The referee separated the two half way through the round but Chadwick takes the fight back to the fence quickly and remained there till the end of the round. The second round was similar to the first with Chadwick taking it to the cage fence and administering a few knees. Chadwick finally gets the takedown and works from the top whilst wrestling Sutherland to the close of the round. The final round begins and early, Sutherland manages to rock and cut Chadwick but he manages to recover. Chadwick once again takes it to the cage and tries for a takedown. Sutherland breaks free but only temporarily and is soon back at the cage fence. Sutherland turns it round and the fight continues with them both striking. Chadwick strike connects with Sutherland and seems to rock him slightly. The fight ends with Chadwick having pinned Sutherland against the cage again. The judges award the win and the title to Chadwick via unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28).

Co-Main Event – OMMAC British Featherweight Title – Shay Walsh vs. Andrew Fisher:

The first round saw Walsh go straight for the takedown but Fisher defended it well and although Walsh has him up against the cage, Fisher breaks free. The two title contenders then stand and strike each other with both delivering nice combinations. Fisher on many occasions throws a short left jab and a quick right uppercut, this seems to be affective and now Walsh has blood coming from his nose and mouth. Walsh then goes for another takedown but is unsuccessful and the two continue to stand and bang with each other until the close of the round. The second round sees the two fighters standing and delivering a number of shots again with jabs, upper cuts and hard strikes. Walsh again tries for the takedown and after two attempts finally gets it. Fisher managed to get back to his feet only for Walsh to lift Fisher up and slam him to the ground. Fisher tries for a submission but Walsh defends and again tries for top position until the close of the round.

The doctor is called into the cage and comes to have a look at Walsh. After close inspection the doctor tells the referee to call a end to the fight as it would appear Walsh has broken his jaw. Walsh did not want the fight to be stopped but the decision is out of his hands and Fisher is awarded the OMMAC British featherweight title.

It’s believed that the first round uppercut broke Walsh’s jaw in four places but wasn’t fully noticed until the end of the second round.

AFC Featherweight Title – Chino Nwinyinya vs. Thomas Nolan:

This fight was for the vacant AFC featherweight title between MMA Academy’s Chino Nwinyinya and Thomas Nolan from Mataleon. The fight went the full three rounds with Nwinyinya dominating throughout. Nwinyinya went straight for the takedowns and wrestled Nolan well on the ground. Each and every time that Nolan managed to get back to his feet it was short lived even though he did try and defend. The fight went the distance and the judges awarded the AFC featherweight title to Chino Nwinyinya.
