A welterweight bout between third-ranked and fifth-ranked in the 170lbs division has been signed for UFC 202, with the fight having welterweight championship implications

Former welterweight title challenger Carlos Condit will return to action as he and Demian Maia have signed to face each other in a 170lbs contest with the bout slated for UFC 202, which takes place on August 20th from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada

It’s expected that the winner of Condit/Maia will be next in line after Stephen Thompson to receive a welterweight title fight in their next Octagon outing

Fifth-ranked American Condit, thirty two years old, is coming off a loss in his last fight and had suggest after that January split decision defeat to divisional champion Robbie Lawler that he was considering retirement

Condit(30-9) is a former UFC welterweight interim champion, having downed Nick Diaz for the interim title, though lost the unification bout to Georges St Pierre via unanimous decision in November 2012

Brazil native Maia(23-6), currently ranked third in the welterweight division, is a former middleweight championship challenger and is currently riding a six fight winning streak, and was last seen inside the Octagon defeating Matt Brown via third submission at May’s UFC 198
