Eight-ranked Derrick Lewis looked to continue his ascent up the heavyweight division as he took on ninth-ranked Travis Browne in the main event of UFC Fight Night 105 from Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia with six fights comprising the main card

Things kicked off in the lightweight division, as Canadian Alessanadro Ricci(10-4) faced American Paul Felder(12-3), with the American entering the bout as betting favourite

It didn’t take long for Felder long to justify being betting favourite as after tentative striking exchanges for majority of the first round, Felder caught Ricci with a short elbow to the face after Ricci tried to close the distance which dropped the Canadian and after a few more punches on the downed Ricci the referee stepped in and waved off the fight as Felder bagged the TKO win at 4:44

The women’s bantamweight division was up next, as Sara McMann(10-3, #7BW) took on Gina Mazany(4-0) with McMann the big betting favourite to take the bout

McMann came out aggressive early, securing numerous takedowns within the first two minutes, and after completing the final one against the fence, McMann transitioned into a arm triangle choke to which Mazany had to choice but to tap, as McMann picked up the easy win at 1:14 of the first round

Two Ultimate Fighter competitors did battle in the middleweight division, as Canadian Elias Theodorou(13-1) fought Brazilian Cezar Ferreira(12-5)

The first bout of the main card to go all three rounds, the fight was a back-and-four affair that encompassed both the stand up game and ground grappling with Theodorou being the aggressor in the first round and being able to get the better of the striking exchanges, which is where most of the first took place

Moving into the second round, Ferreira bounced back and utilised his takedowns and grappling to get the better of his opponent though Theodorou likewise used his grappling mixed with striking to keep the fight evenly balanced heading into the final round

It was essentially more of the same for the third and final round, with neither fighter able to gain a clear advantage as the bout ended, and after fifteen minutes the fight went to the judges, with all three giving the bout to Theodorou via unanimous decision

In another North American battle, undefeated Canadian Gavin Tucker(9-0) faced American Sam Sicilia(15-7) in a featherweight contest with Tucker making his UFC debut in front of his hometown crowd, while also entering the fight as betting favourite

Tucker was the aggressor for most of the first round, using his speed and footwork to land some leg kicks while avoiding most of Sicilia’s strikes, though round one was a very close one as neither fight gained a clear advantage

For rounds two and three the pattern was the same, though Tucker managed to become more dominate as the fight moved into the final round by landing some brutal leg kicks and body kicks which slowed Sicilia somewhat, particularly in the final few minutes of the last round

Sicilia simply didn’t have an answer to the superior striking of Tucker, and in the end the Tucker got the win via unanimous decision

A welterweight contest was the co-main event, as middleweights Hector Lombard(34-6-1-2NC) and Johny Hendricks(17-6, #10WW) did battle with both looking climb into the upper echelon of the 185lbs division

Round one featured little action, with both fighters reluctant to throw any big shots, though Lombard was able to get the better of the striking exchanges with Hendricks being out-paced and choosing to not attempt any takedowns

Hendricks had more success in the second round, as he was able to avoid most of Lombard’s punches and kicks, though his progress was stopped by a low blow which required the bout to be stopped for a few moments however Hendricks was okay to continue, after which Lombard slowed somewhat due to fatigue as the bout moved into the final round

Despite Lombard continuing to slow in the third round, Hendricks was unable to advantage and couldn’t land any of his trademark huge punches as Lombard, despite being tired, was able to defend well and avoid taking any significant damage as the fight went all fifteen minutes

In the end, all three judges gave the bout to Hendricks via unanimous decision, as the American snaps a three fight losing streak

In the heavyweight main event, Derrick Lewis(17-4-1NC, #8HW) was looking to continue his impressive march up the heavyweight rankings as he took on Travis Browne(18-5-1, #9HW) who was aiming to break a two fight losing streak

A quiet first few minutes was punctuated by a Browne front kick to the stomach of Lewis that rocked Lewis and slowed him, and from there Browne continued to land brutal leg and body kicks that took their toll however Lewis was able to weather the storm and even managed to rock and drop Browne with some punches however Browne also managed to recover as the fight made it to the second round

Much like the first round, after a few minutes of not much action Lewis was able to land some huge uppercuts and hooks on Browne and backed him up against the fence however Browne managed to absorb the shots and continue, however after landing a huge overhand right that grazed the top of Browne’s head and dropped him, Lewis landed a few more ground and pound punches that knocked out Browne as Lewis bagged the knockout win at 3:12 of the second round
